When I worked in the corporate world, I always looked at my purpose through the lens of my career. Since I worked in the software industry, I wanted to bring software to people to improve their working lives. It really made me happy to work on certain projects for certain companies. Implementing enterprise software across multiple teams within a company taught me that an integrated approach to data sharing can reduce confusion, boost efficiency, and improve communication across teams. In addition, it can increase the company’s profits.

My realization, as I learned about coaching, was that purpose was a higher definition, a meta definition. While I enjoyed implementing software that helped my clients, it wasn’t my purpose. What was more significant were the interconnections that the software established across the various teams at my clients’ companies. Further, once I did the “Find your Why” exercise from Simon Sinek’s team I could use one word to define my purpose: interconnectedness.

I have always been happier when working in a team, achieving seamless interconnections, such as implementing enterprise software. Furthermore, I found meaning and purpose when I connected with people from different areas in a more meaningful manner. The by-product of doing the “Find Your Why” exercise was a huge realization for me: when I was aligned with my purpose, I was effortlessly happy or at the very least very content. And the opposite was true: when I was dramatically misaligned with my purpose, I was unhappy, frustrated, listless, and lost.

Defining one’s purpose can clear the path to a better life. Although life purposes can change over time, they usually have similar themes. Knowing your purpose, especially if it brings happiness and contentment, can help you make better choices.

Spend a few minutes daily taking deep breaths, finding your center and pondering these points:

  • What is your purpose? Can you define it?
  • Is there a common thread throughout your life when you were happy or content?
  • Where do you find happiness when working in a flow state? Did you enjoy certain projects and activities?
