Since November 2022, when ChatGPT launched, there have been waves of articles about what it means to have usable artificial intelligence (AI) tools. These articles range from the need for AI monitoring tools to detect plagiarism to the prediction that certain jobs or certain a set of tasks will be taken over by AI. What if we happily relinquished these analytical tasks to the machines; in order to realign and recommit to human skills?
For the last 150 years, starting from the Industrial Age to the recent Information Age, we as a people have become more analytical. Some may say at the cost of our human (or humane) skills. By foregoing the quantitative and analytical we can make room for the qualitative and empathic. And, we gain the following:
- learning to be more self-aware;
- being self-aware creates mental and emotional space;
- this space gives us the grace to be more curious;
- and curiosity can lead to understanding, innovation, and compassion.
If your work hours involve quantitative tasks, start to identify the qualitative tasks to see if these can serve your role. How could focusing on curiosity and compassion make your job future-proof and help you live a balanced life?
