My journey in becoming a coach started in the summer of 2017. I was disillusioned with large organizations. I was looking for ways to feel better. I happened to see this 2011 TED talk by psychologist Shawn Achor where he listed 5 ways to be more positive. I applied most of his recommendations that were detailed in his book, “The Happiness Advantage,” specifically, I kept a daily gratitude journal for 4 months in 2017. I was surprised to witness a visible (and so far, a lasting) change in my perspective: from negative to positive. While I no longer write down my gratitudes regularly, I do savor simple positive experiences daily, because gratitude listing has become a habit. I relish … morning sunshine, sweet blueberries, and a friend’s laughter. When problems appear, and they do regularly, I am not rattled by them.
So, this talk by Dr. Laurie Santos of Yale University, brought full circle the simple recipe for better living:
- Social Connections: Embracing the beauty of life, real-time conversations are like wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket of human connection. Engaging with others on this genuine level is a reminder that we’re all on this journey together, sharing our experiences, thoughts, and dreams.
- Helping Others: Focusing on the well-being of those around us is like planting seeds of kindness. By lending a helping hand, we not only make someone else’s day better but also nurture our own sense of purpose and fulfillment.
- Gratitude: Imagine starting each day with a heartfelt reminder of the wonderful things already present in our lives. It keeps us grounded, appreciating the small joys that often go unnoticed.
- Savoring the Present Moment: The art of being present is a true gift we can offer ourselves. Imagine indulging in the sweetness of a summer fruit or relishing the melody of a bird’s song. This practice invites us to step into the richness of the present moment.
- Moving Your Body: Our bodies are vessels of vitality and energy, meant to move and dance through life. Nature becomes our playground, nurturing not just our bodies but our spirits as well.
Embracing these practices is like weaving a tapestry of wellness, kindness, and appreciation for life. So, as you explore these paths, remember that even the smallest steps can lead to the most remarkable journeys of personal growth and fulfillment.
Most psychologists and neuroscientists are saying similar things. Let’s explore these various methods in the coming weeks. What would change for you if you tried one of these techniques?
